Justlife's Move in Packs

Justlife recently received some funding from St Martin in the Fields Frontline Network to design and create 50 Move-in Packs for people moving into emergency and temporary accommodation. The aim of their project ‘A Fresh Start’ is to provide basic supplies for people helping them to have their basic needs met and therefore increasing their chances of sustaining their tenancy.Kate Standing from the Brighton Justlife team writes about creating the Move In Packs….When we first began thinking about these Move In Packs we decided we need to get some outside advice on what would be best suited to go into the packs. We conducted a survey that included: frontline workers, the local authority, emergency accommodation providers and people who have/had lived in emergency or temporary accommodation.After receiving their feedback we came up with a pack that fits in to two bags - another challenge of the packs was to make them easily transportable, light enough to carry yet still with the essential items needed.After conducting a short survey with the local authority, frontline workers and those living/or who have lived in emergency accommodation a and emergency accommodation providers to identify what would be most useful in a pack we produced a pack that fits into 2 bags – so these can be carried easily – as another challenge was how are we going to get packs to people when they most need them.We also wanted to make sure the bags were useful too – for storing the items (they zip close) and have a use in their own right – the smaller one is ideal for food shopping and the larger one makes a great laundry bag.The small bag contains things that someone might need on their first night – basic toiletries, crockery, a kettle, tea and cup-a-soups. The larger bag has more cooking equipment, a toaster and other useful things like an alarm clock radio and file organizer.We have now made up our first packs, all ready to hand out! There has been lots of interest when buying the contents for the packs - with people commenting on what a great idea it is, and even one shop donating some extra things to go into the packs!We are really pleased with how they have come together and have valued the opportunity to put these together, with thought and care, and to give people some practical items at a time of great stress and anxiety, that they can keep and take with them when they eventually move into more secure accommodation.To find out more get in touch with Kate.
