Did you know that at Justlife Brighton we run a mentoring programme? As well supporting our service users with health needs, accommodation and community engagement activities we also run a mentoring programme for those who have specific goals they want to work towards. The mentoring programme uses listening and therapeutic tools to enable people to reflect and plan for the changes they want to make in their lives. It gives people a space where they are listened to, valued and encouraged to find their path forward in life. The weekly sessions are in a place that is comfortable and safe for the service user such as in a cafe or on a walk along the seafront. These sessions vary in length, depending on what the client needs, though we can work with someone for up to three months. We currently have six people in our mentoring programme and have had 15 people through in total.Through these regular support sessions one of our participants has managed to stop drinking and maintain abstinence, he is now enjoying his life more than he can remember ever having done so in the past! This is what he said about his experience of being mentored: “Do not underestimate the power of listening. The listening that I have had through my mentor has been healing for me”. This sums up for us all that we are trying to achieve with the mentoring programme.
