Successful start for IT for Jobs

Good IT skills are proving more and more of a necessity in life today. The ‘IT for Jobs’ course at the Justlife centre in Manchester is proving popular with our service users who are keen to move forward into volunteering or employment. We currently have six service users attending the six week pilot course. All are regular attendees of our weekly Job Club but currently require one to one support due to a lack of IT skills. Our aim, through the course, is to build confidence in our service users to develop skills to access and use computers to search and apply for work independently or with limited support. Modules covered over the six weeks include: understanding computers, using Microsoft Word 2013, navigating the internet, using email and searching and applying for work.

In the first few weeks of the course Jason has grown in confidence and is now more optimistic about securing work, “I was really anxious before attending Justlife and walking through the doors a few weeks ago was daunting, but I’m so happy I did as I already feel so much more confident. I normally find it difficult to learn, but I’ve understood everything, I’ve got it and I’ll remember it!”.Justlife’s IT for Jobs tutor, Sarah Todd, said, “Equipping people with basic IT skills can make a massive, positive difference to people’s lives and potentially lead to opportunities that were previously not accessible to them. The majority of job applications are now online and basic IT literacy is a requirement in many jobs, therefore having a basic level of competency in using computers is crucial.”The IT for Jobs course is equipping service users with the necessary tools to enable them to independently search and apply for work and move forward into employment. Sarah added, “The progress that each individual on the course has made is brilliant. At first no one could turn a laptop on or use a mouse and now they are confidently navigating their way around the internet and taking positive steps into gaining employment.”On completion of the course all service users who have shown a basic level of competency in IT and have committed to attending all of the workshops will receive a certificate.
