Peer Research Manual: An Essential Guide

First published on April 2025

An essential guide to setting up a peer research group that puts lived experience at the heart of research and social change. This resource is free for all to use, we simply ask you let us know if you use it to inform your work in anyway.

Informed by two years of real-world problem-solving, action, observation, reflection, and refinement, our Peer Research Manual is a practical and accessible resource for any organisation seeking to establish a peer research group.

Developed by individuals with lived experience of homelessness, the manual is inclusive, psychologically informed, and built with accessibility and intersectionality at its core.

What’s inside?

The Peer Research Manual is structured into five sections. You can download the full document.

Each section is also available to download individually:

Covers key considerations such as accessibility, lived experience payments, ethics, safety, and support.

  • Part 3 - Our Stories
    • A collection of experiences and reflections from the groups involved, offering real-world insight into peer research in practice.

Why download it?

  • Centre lived experience: Supports research in homelessness, recovery, migration, community development, and beyond by putting lived experience at the heart of every stage.

  • Adaptable across sectors: While rooted in homelessness and temporary accommodation, the guide can be tailored to any research project in any industry.

  • Amplify marginalised voices: Amplifies unheard voices while building skills and confidence within your community.

  • Uncover hidden issues: Peer research helps reveal under-reported issues from first-hand experiences.

  • Tackle complex challenges safely: Provides a safe, structured starting point for addressing large-scale societal issues.
