Across the UK, thousands of people are living in temporary accommodation (TA) that’s anything but temporary. Stays are too long. Standards are too low. And too many people are stuck in places that damage their health, wellbeing and sense of control.
This needs to change.
At Justlife, we believe TA should be a safety net that protects people in crisis, not one that causes more harm. But with demand rising and resources stretched, the system is struggling. This work is based on hundreds of hours of consultation with 88 individuals working in the sector, and 43 individuals with lived experience of staying in TA. In this report we set out their views on the issues of key concern, suggesting routes out of the current crisis to create a better vision for temporary accommodation.
The new policy report explores:
A broad range of problems contributing to a crisis in temporary accommodation
The solutions to get us out of that crisis
A vision for how TA can be short, safe and healthy
This isn’t just about highlighting what’s wrong; it’s about building a better way forward.
This report is for anyone looking to get a broad understanding of the temporary accommodation crisis we see today, and how we can move towards improving it for the near and long-term future.
