Brighton is well known for many things, it’s street art, bushy beards, the lanes, and of course it’s many, many coffee shops. There are also a large number of start-ups and social enterprises trying make a positive difference to our city. One such local project has decided to combine social action and the making of excellent coffee. Bloom, based in One Church is a project that nurtures development through coffee barista skills for people in tough places. Bloom offers a whole person approach to skills based learning, training and employability which reflects the way that Justlife tries to work with individuals who need support. For Bloom community comes first, a safe place to nurture relationships, broaden social circles through social inclusion, and foster friendships. Bloom’s Community brings together a rich and diverse group from across Brighton, made up from those wanting to offer their assets to make a difference to those wanting to change their circumstances. Recently a number of Justlife service users have been getting involved with Bloom; seeing them grow in confidence while they train has been brilliant! As they go back time and time again to hone their skills and also volunteer at our sessions serving coffee has been great! One of our service users said this after visiting Bloom for the first time: “I went for the first time last week and it was great! I learnt a lot and I am hoping to go to Bloom everyday next week!”We hope for a continued partnership with Bloom and look forward to more and more of our services users becoming involved in the Bloom community. Bloom will be looking for volunteer mentors in the new year to journey alongside their trainees and help participants to be supported more holistically.
