Last week a group of 5 people from Justlife took a trip along the Manchester canal on ‘Hazel the wellbeing boat’.Providing aspirational activities and new experiences for people is key to Justlife’s approach. Justlife service users frequently face severe and multiple disadvantage and live in social and environmentally poor circumstances. Taking a break from the everyday challenges provides opportunity for fruitful conversations, positive relationship building and growing hope. One service user said: “Time feels different whilst on the boat, everything is slower and it was satisfying being away from fast paced city life and technology.” Others started noticing and enjoying their natural surroundings: the birds, the flowers, the warmth of the sun.The group boated down the Ashton Canal from Portland Basin towards Manchester. This was the first time that any of the group had been on a narrow boat so it was a new, exciting adventure for all involved! Fortunately the sun was out, making the experience relaxing and peaceful. We would like to thank The Wooden Canal Boat Society who are supported by The Big Lottery Fund for organising the trip. The volunteer crew including Chris and Joan were brilliant hosts.
