Justlife visits Brighton Recovery College

Two weeks ago 13 of our service users came on a trip to the Brighton Recovery College open morning. We had a brilliant day together hearing all about the difference courses that are on offer and lots of the group signed up for more than one course!

Brighton Recovery College runs in partnership with Southdown and Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, and is for anyone who has experienced mental health challenges. The college uses educations to give people the opportunity to learn more about mental health, recovery and gain an excellent understanding of their own self-care.

We met in the cafe for tea and coffee first and then headed over to the open morning. The group were really enthusiastic about the day and everyone signed up for at least one course, including multiple day courses and one day workshops, such as: weaving, managing difficult situations, recovery through art, food as a wellness tool, wellbeing through nature, managing depression, introduction to managing anxiety, returning to learning, anger management and dancing! It was a great bonding experience for the group, many of them helping each other to read and fill out application forms.

Supporting people to sign up to these courses is a good way of getting  people back into studying and enjoying a different kind of learning experience. The Recovery College is a place people can return to in the future independently without Justlife’s support – it’s a place where our service users can gain a better understanding of themselves, gain more independence, meet and mix with a variety of people, form new friendships and engage with a new space. There’s even a graduation ceremony in July!

It’s so important to us to embrace a fantastic project by another organisation such as Southdown, who do a lot to support vulnerably housed people in Brighton and Hove. We collaborate with them often and work together to best help our service users. Do take a look at the Recovery College website to find out more about their upcoming courses!
