Justlife at Home: Meeting the Need

Justlife at Home has housed 4 people in the first 2 months of it’s second year.

Housing people in the private rented sector (PRS) is usually difficult to access because of deposits, references and lack of support. But Justlife at Home opens fresh doors to private lettings for people in housing need.

Since starting Justlife at Home, the project has housed 26 people. The stability of a home has enabled 7 people to move into employment during this time and 12 people have sought help to move towards employment through the Justlife Jobclub and other services.

jlah1Projects like Justlife at Home are becoming increasingly important in the light of welfare changes and cuts to housing support.

Last week Shelter released research announcing that it has seen a surge in demand for its advice services as the high cost of housing, rising living costs and cuts to housing support leave rising numbers of people struggling to pay for their homes.

In the last year, the housing charity has seen a 40 per cent increase in the numbers of callers in England helped with housing costs, arrears and other debt issues, while in the last six months alone, visitors to Shelter’s online housing costs advice have doubled.

Campbell Robb, Shelter’s Chief Executive said: “This research highlights the frightening lack of options available to people who are fighting to keep a roof over their head. Sadly, with little remaining of the housing safety net meant to support them in tough times, many can quickly find themselves at risk of losing their home.”
