Andy’s life took a downward turn as his relationship deteriorated and his physical disability worsened, leaving him reliant on crutches. Struggling with isolation and depression, alcohol became his escape. In 2020, he lost his job and was placed in unsafe emergency accommodation after an involuntary detox. Living in “rancid” conditions without follow-up support, Andy relapsed, deepening his hopelessness.
“The gin bottle was a big pause button for all the problems”
A friend referred Andy to Justlife, where he received consistent and person centred support from Holly, his key worker. Over a year, Holly assisted him with securing disability benefits, food bank access, medical appointments, and advocated for better housing conditions. With her help, Andy moved to more suitable housing and started engaging in recovery programs.
“Now I’m not so frightened of emotions - I’m addressing them, rather than masking them.”
Today, Andy is sober and following a 12-step program, rebuilding his life. He has transformed the garden at his project, sharing his cooking and gardening skills with others. With improved finances and a solid long-term housing plan, Andy feels hopeful about the future and aims to help others through his experiences.
“All my issues were interrelated and contributed to my situation. They all needed to be addressed together, instead of one at a time. More people could be helped if more services could support them like this”.
