Chief Executive Officer of Justlife and Director of Justlife CIC
Gary has worked in Voluntary Sector leadership for over twenty years and has extensive experience of leadership at operational, management and strategic levels. Starting out as a youth worker in Brighton he studied Youth and Community studies with the University of Wales before moving to Manchester in 2000. From 2000 – 2007 he was the leader of a pioneering community project in Openshaw, East Manchester where he gained unique insights into urban communities and the complex issues facing communities affected by deprivation From February 2007 -2009 Gary provided strategic support to an international charity helping them to develop community projects in North West England and also worked as an Associate of The Cooperative College where he regularly delivers CMI accredited leadership training to third sector leaders. In December 2008 Gary was awarded the Independent Newspaper Scholarship to study for and MBA at Durham Business School. He has also recently been providing consultancy services to PCTs, housing associations and Social Enterprises in Hastings, London, Leeds and Blackburn.

Steve is the Chief Executive at Spitalfields Crypt Trust (SCT), an addictions recovery and homelessness charity in east London. Prior to that, he founded and ran Intentionality CIC, a social impact measurement consultancy. Intentionality CIC worked with 600 social enterprises over 6 years. Steve formerly had a role developing social enterprises for one of the UK’s largest charities, The Salvation Army. He has experience in consultancy, leadership development and procurement management roles, working intentionally across both the private and third sectors. Steve has an MBA from Imperial College, London with a dissertation on social entrepreneurship and well-being.

Gretta has worked extensively in project management, most recently working on major regeneration and construction projects across the North West and in Northern Ireland. When she first moved to Manchester, she initially worked in the third sector for a community organisation based in East Manchester where Justlife Manchester is now based. Gretta was one of the founding directors of Justlife. She volunteers with charities and local organisations in a number of roles, including having served as a governor at two primary schools in east Manchester.

Helen was the Head of NW Region for the Big Lottery Fund, the largest UK lottery distributor, for 8 years, having previously managed a grant assessment and management team. She was one of 9 regional Heads across England that led a small regional team gathering regional intelligence through research and stakeholder engagement in order to feed into investment design and decision making. She was also responsible for all of the communications and public affairs work in the region. During her time at Big Lottery Fund, Helen worked on a range of projects including the outcome based funding approach, designing and delivering training, organisational restructure and the development of a new funding management system. I’m currently a Director of my own company, providing a range of customer service based auditing services to businesses, which I’ve been doing since 2015. In between leaving Big Lottery Fund and setting up my own company I also worked as an Operations Manager for Ombudsman Services, which is a national private sector ombudsman scheme that independently resolves complaints between consumers and companies.
Previously Helen worked for North & Mid Cheshire Training and Enterprise Council where she was responsible for Open Learning, Service Development and Economic Research. During this time she was also a Board member for the British Association for Open Learning and a consultant for the then Department for Education and Employment.

Alex has a breadth of experience within the private, public and voluntary sectors that includes a proven track record in strategic communications, project development & management and funding. She has frequently held pioneering responsibilities, notably establishing, managing and embedding successful projects and partnerships in the voluntary sector for both RETAS and Justlife. Alex initiated and led Justlife’s research programme with the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) North. Alex left Justlife in September 2016, after which she became a director of the Justlife Foundation. She recently completed an MBA from the University of Leeds, focusing her dissertation on design thinking in the public sector. She is currently working as a consultant. Alex loves running, led the Justlife running Club and has raised money for Justlife by running 3 marathons.

Hannah has worked in the housing sector since 2005 and is currently Regional Manager for Great Places Housing Group, Manchester Region – involved in developing and managing affordable housing and community support projects across the North West. As well as a First class degree in Business (Liverpool, 2003) she has a Distinction PGDip in Housing Practice (Salford, 2007) and is a fully qualified corporate member of the Chartered Institute of Housing.

Hannah qualified as a nurse in 2003 from Manchester University and initially worked in primary care in areas of high deprivation in central Manchester. This experience influenced Hannah to develop an interest in addressing health inequalities and she subsequently undertook further postgraduate study in substance misuse. Hannah and Gary moved to Brighton in 2012 where Hannah because the lead nurse in Brighton’s Homeless Health Care service, a role she still holds. Hannah is a founding director of Justlife, and is also an Executive Director of Arch Healthcare, which now runs the Homeless Health Care service for Brighton. She is currently studying for a master’s degree at Brighton University in Community Specialist Practitioner in General Practice Nursing (ANP MA).

Tracey has worked in local authority accountancy for 18 years for both The Greater Manchester Combined Authority and Manchester City Council and passed her final Cipfa exam in June 2017. During this experience, she has worked in a number of departments where understanding the various elements of, and services provided by, the organisation and creating a better experience for customers through sound financial management has been key to her role. This includes the provision of financial advice and support to the various charities supported by Manchester City Council most notably The Lord Mayor's charity. Tracey joined the Justlife team as Trustee and Director in April 2018.
